Canabalt!

If you haven’t tried it yet, check out Canabalt now, damn you!  It’s a dead simple game – a bit like Mirror’s Edge mixed in with that million selling indie treasure Doodle Jump.

The idea is pretty simple.  You are running along the tops of buildings and try not to die – which you will inevitably do many times.  There is little else to say.  What could you write about Copter.  Press the bloody space bar!

“I made Canabalt in 5 very long days (at least 60 hours) – 1 day at the start of the month, two days at PromJam, and then this weekend.  Danny B made the music for it tonight.  It follows the theme (loosely I am sure!) by using only one button to interact, and by using only 6 colors to display everything.  Also, the gameplay and graphics are under 100kb, the other 3MB is all sound files.”

DrPetter has certainly outdone himself with this lovely creation.  What he has created is a piece of software that allows you to sculpt 3D models in a very kool and interesting new way.  You get a ball and a variety of tools to manipulate it with.  You can pinch it, grab it, smooth it and flatten it.  The result is a very compelling and relaxing piece of software.  It is also a little bit erotic!

This Hoogerbrugge fellow is one mad son of a gun. I wish I had his imagination. Over the years he has created some very weird interactive animations. His Modern Living series, which he created over a 3 year period includes features a crazy bloke ripping his face off to reveal a swarm of flies underneath and he stumbles about drunk, hiccuping and puking. His Nails series features another man and a load more strangeness. He headbutts himself, acts like a dog on a car bonnet and pulls himself into his legs and begins dancing.

Coming from Amanita Design, the people that brought you Samorost 1 and 2 amongst others, Machinarium is a point-and-click adventure of extraordinary beauty. It was winner of the “Excellence in Visual Art” award at this year’s Independent Game Festival and it is easy to see why.

Playing a funny little robot who has been booted out of a mechanical city, the game sees you help him try to get back in. You will also need to save his girlfriend and stop a group of evil baddies from setting off a bomb along the way.

The actual game play is maddeningly frustrating, but highly compelling at the same time. The puzzles themselves are brilliantly conceived. There must have been a massive amount of thought put into each one. They generally involve switches, levers, buttons and many strange mechanical contraptions and you will find often yourself staring at the screen without a clue as to what to do next. Having said this, they are all totally logical and you will eventually work them out, usually just before your brain starts leaking from the ear hole.

The music throughout is a pleasant enough chilled out ambient track written by Tomas Dvorak. He has released 5 extra free tracks on the Amanita blog which are worth a listen.

7 Czech developers have spent some 3 years and a great deal of their savings to bring you this little gem. If you go to their site you can download the game as well as Samorost 2 for the measly price of 10 US dollars. Go and get it now!
